Measurements to consider and help you choose which item to purchase:
The 27" butt chain has 18" of rubber-covered cable & at each end, with a half of a chain link stationary at each end (sticking out), so at the smallest measurement, you have 20" to work with. Take into consideration that you will need 2 attachment pieces at either end, a quick link to attach the butt chain on one end and a snap at the other. These attachments & links take up precious inches, and you do not want your finished butt chain to be loose, because the horse could crouch down & go underneath it backwards. Extra links should be clipped off & removed, because they make too much noise otherwise.
The 42" butt chain also has a half chain link stationary on each end. The minimum you have to work with here is 34". The same conditions apply as above.
